Martha Deese, the author.

Martha Deese is an authority on Gerald Summers. She earned a master’s degree in decorative art history from Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parsons School of Design, New York. Her thesis on Summers and Makers of Simple Furniture was the first to shed light on the enigmatic designer. She worked for three decades as an administrator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. During that time, her enthusiasm for Summers’s furniture never wavered. Her groundbreaking article Gerald Summers and Makers of Simple Furniture published in the Journal of Design History (Oxford University Press, 1992) became the principal source on the designer. Her present book is the culmination of years of new research and offers a more richly detailed view of Gerald and Marjorie’s remarkable career as purveyors of modern furniture.
